The Kent State Department of Athletics and WNIR 100.1 FM have reached a five-year agreement to air Golden Flashes football and men's basketball. The partnership was agreed upon by both parties on Thursday afternoon.
WNIR, which is the number one rated radio station in the Akron metro market among listeners ages 18-49, has a signal that reaches west to Lodi, east to the Pennsylvania border, north to Lake Erie and south to New Philadelphia. The range encompasses the Kent/Akron market, while covering Cleveland, Canton and Youngstown as well.
“I am truly pleased to be partnered with the top station in our market,” KSU Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy said. “This will allow our nearly 100,000 alums in the area and our enthusiastic fan base to better follow our football and basketball programs. I believe that both Kent State and WNIR will benefit greatly from this partnership.”
The agreement also calls for weekly in-season appearances on WNIR by head football coach Doug Martin and head men's basketball coach Jim Christian. For football, the station will air an hour-long pre-game show and a 30-minute post-game wrap-up, in addition to half-hour pre- and post-game shows for basketball.
