KENT, Ohio -- Cobrani Mixon (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS), who was rated by Rivals.com as the eighth-best inside linebacker in the nation as a senior in 2005, has accepted a written offer of athletic-related financial aid and will attend Kent State beginning in the fall of 2007. KSU head football coach Doug Martin made the announcement on Monday.
Mixon (6-1 1/2, 225), who redshirted at Michigan last season, must sit out the 2007 campaign due to NCAA transfer guidelines.
“I am really excited about getting a player of Cobrani's caliber,” Martin said. “At the same time, it's great to add another student-athlete from the state of Ohio. Cobrani played with [current KSU redshirt freshman] Brian Lainhart in high school, so we already knew a lot about him.”
Mixon was also listed as four-star prospect and the ninth-best prospect in the state of Ohio according to Rivals.com. In addition, he was rated as the No. 73 overall player nationally by Prep Football Report, a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 30 linebacker according to Scout.com, the No. 18 linebacker in the nation by PrepStar Magazine and No. 18 on the Detroit Free Press “Best of the Midwest” rankings.
Playing under head coach Kerry Coombs, Mixon helped lead Colerain High School to the Division I state playoffs as a senior after playing through an ACL injury his junior season as an integral part of the school's state championship team. He recorded 135 tackles as a senior, adding two interceptions and a defensive touchdown. As a junior, he notched 100 stops, including 12 tackles for loss and six sacks - despite missing three weeks with a knee injury.
A first team All-Ohio performer in Division I as a senior, Mixon was also a three-time all-city, and all-conference selection and two-time All-Southwest Ohio honoree. He also played basketball his freshman and sophomore years.
