Flashes Wrap Up Successful Day in the Kent State Tune-Up

KENT, Ohio - Jessica Lhotsky's near-record time of 2:52.07 in her 1000-meter win highlighted a strong day of competition for the Kent State track and field teams in the Kent State Tune-up Saturday (2/23).
The open meet at the Kent State University Field House gave some athletes the chance to improve their performances before the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend at Eastern Michigan while also giving others a chance to rest their tired legs.
“We didn't run all our people of the women's side or the men's side,” said head coach Bill Lawson. “(We) rested a lot of people for the MAC Championships.”
Lhotsky's win was more than 15 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The sophomore's time was 1.44 seconds behind the all-time record set by Jennifer Fascione in 2005.
“An unbelievable run, really by herself,” said Lawson. “If we had a rabbit in that race, she would have easily broke the school record. She had nobody to run against.”
“It was a very good effort by her,” said assistant coach Mark Croghan. “I think it sets herself up well for the MACs next week. She's got to feel pretty confident going in.”
Junior Sarah McCort finished third in the 1000 meters with a 3:08.25.
Junior Ashley Rhodaback won the women's 300-meter dash with a time of 41.00 as three of the top four finishes belonged to Kent State. Junior Erica Mosby came in a close second, finishing in 41.02, while sophomore Martina Nwoga finished in fourth place with a time of 42.11.
Senior Annie Zakelj won the tiebreaker and came in first in the high jump with a leap of 5-05.
“(It) wasn't her best of the season, but still she got the victory today,” said Lawson. “Good job by her.”
Sophomore Brooke Sposito came in seventh with a jump of 5-03, while sophomore Brittany Thurman and senior Ali Borland tied for ninth with leaps of 5-01.
Senior Andrea Bryson once again had a strong meet, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.27, while coming in second place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64 after finishing in eighth the final spot to qualify for the finals - in the preliminaries.
“She's had good doubles, in the 60 and 200, five weeks in a row,” said Lawson. “I think she's ready to pop one at the MACs and get something done.”
Freshman Jerrica Manley came in sixth in the 200 meters (25.75) and Mosby came in seventh in the 60 meters (7.86), one-one hundredth of a second faster than her time in the preliminaries.
Freshman Ava Haynes finished in second place in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.81 after finishing in second during the preliminaries (9.06).
In the 400 meters, sophomore Vianna Matthews came in ninth with a time of 59.49.
Junior Erin Ferut propelled herself to a vault of 10-10 ¾ to take sixth in the pole vault.
Freshman Samantha Fetter took third in the shot put with a throw of 44-01 ½.
In the weight throw, junior Effua Ampadu came in sixth with a throw of 56-07 ½.
On the men's side, Evan Whiting took home first in the shot put with a throw of 57-09 ¾, a lifetime personal record for the sophomore as he just missed provisionally qualifying for the 2008 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Junior Anthony Conner captured 10th with a toss of 50-10 ¼ and also took home eighth in the weight throw with a hurl of 56-03 ¾.
Senior Jaroslaw Zakrzewski was first in the weight throw with a launch of 64-01 ¾, while fellow senior John Harper took third (60-10).
“He's right there where he needs to be, to hopefully (finish strong) next week at the MACs,” said Lawson.
Erik Lindahl, who missed significant time earlier this season, took second in the pole vault with a leap of 16-02 ¾, a lifetime indoor PR for the senior.
“The second-best performance of his career,” said Lawson. “(It's) good to have him back.”
Sophomore teammate Jeremy Brading came in seventh with a vault of 15-03.
Freshman Stephen Thompson finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98 after qualifying second in the preliminaries.
“If he performs like that he should make the finals at the conference meet,” said Lawson.
Senior Nick Ivancic finished third in the 60-meter preliminary hurdles with a time of 8.28, while sophomore Eric Zigler came in fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.16.
Freshman Hosea Laktabaai came in eight in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.37.
As the teams prepare for the Indoor Championships next week in Ypsilanti, Mich., the Flashes understand that at this point, they will not be able to improve that much more than they already have to this point in the season.
“You can't get in any better shape between now and the conference weekend,” said Lawson. “Now we stay healthy, do some sharpening, let the legs rest a little bit, don't train quite as hard this week, and hopefully go in to the meet with fresh minds and fresh bodies.”
Croghan echoed Lawson's statement.
“As far as the training goes, the hay is in the barn pretty much,” said Croghan. “At this point, we are where we are, and we're not going to be able to change that in the next six days. It's just a matter of getting people lightened up and ready to roll out.”
The Flashes know, though, that they will have to bring their 'A' game to knock off host Eastern Michigan.
“We're right where we need to be,” said Lawson. “It's going to take a Herculean effort to beat Eastern Michigan in their house. They've got a lot of good people...(But) we're going to go in there and go after it.”
Below are the results for all Kent State athletes on Saturday.
