Stoltz earns javelin victory for Kent State on opening day of All-Ohio Championships

CINCINNATI Kent State sophomore Bekah Stoltz continued to regain the promising form she showed before an injury derailed her 2007 track & field season by winning the javelin throw Friday (April 18), the opening day of the All-Ohio Championships.
Stoltz sat out last season with an ACL injury, but has responded by qualifying for the 2008 NCAA Mid East Regional meet, and she continued to positively progress with a mark of 146-05.
“She's improved from the opening meet, and that's a good job by Bekah,” said third-year KSU head track & field coach Bill Lawson.
The Golden Flashes received second-place finishes in the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Timing in at 11 minutes, 21.20 seconds on the women's side was junior Sarah McCort.
“Sarah ran a smart race,” said Lawson. She got caught in the pack and realized the pack was slowing down, but she was aware of her pace and she maintained her own race pace, which is well ahead of where it was a year ago.”
McCort narrowly missed hitting a personal record despite running in a field that was a bit slower than the pace she was aiming for.
“She was feeling good enough that she could be a little bit more aggressive and make a move to get away from that chase pack,” said distance coach Mark Croghan. “She ran the balance of that race on her own, but she had a nice effort to finish second. I'm really happy with her performance.”
Meanwhile, McCort's classmate, Joe Parker, clocked a finish of 9:15.89.
“Joe ran a strong race, but we don't really expect him to really pop a fast one and grab a regional qualification for a few more weeks,” said Lawson.
The time wasn't quite as low as what Parker was shooting for, but Croghan has liked what he has seen from his runner so far this season.
“He's probably a little bit disappointed in his result, but I told him after the race that the difference between this year and last year is his consistency with his performances,” said Croghan. “The breakthrough is going to come, and I'm confident Joe is going to have that performance that gets him to the regional meet.”
KSU chalked up several other noteworthy field efforts at Gettler Stadium.
Grabbing fifth in the men's discus throw was sophomore Anthony Connor with a toss of 161-04. Classmate Evan Whiting took seventh with a distance of 160-02.
In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Effua Ampaudu's 168-04 hurl permitted her to place eighth.
Kent State will put several of their big guns on display during Saturday's events. Lawson is looking for strong outings from senior Shamel Smith in the men's high jump, sophomore Jessica Lhotsky in the women's 800-meter run, freshmen Scott Hilditch and John Minen and junior Tony Jordanek in the men's 1,500-meter run, and the women's and men's 4x100-meter relay teams. The men's unit will feature a new anchor as freshman Brian Hilson is called to duty.
“I think we have certain people wanting to roll,” said Lawson. “At the same time, wherever the cards fall, that's where they fall. I want to get through this meet without people getting hurt and keep them strong for the stretch run of the season.”
