15-Under Final Round Lifts Kent State To Boilermaker Invitational Title

All five Golden Flashes shoot par or better
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 36 ranked Kent State men's golf team shot a 15-under 273 in the final round of the Boilermaker Invitational to capture the overall team title. While the 273 matched the third lowest score in school history, the Golden Flashes won the event by 11 strokes with a 54-hole total of 22-under 842 (284-285-273), which ranks as the second lowest 54-hole total in the KSU record books.
"We just played spectacular today" said Head Coach Herb Page, "Everyone came out focused and made putts which really got us rolling. We didn't have too many mistakes today."
Freshmen John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) and Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) each had a five-under 67 today as all five scorers shot an even par or better.
Hahn's 67 matched the lowest round of his collegiate career and highlighted an 11-under 205 (70-68-67) tournament which place him second overall, his team leading sixth top-10 of the season and the third lowest 54-hole total in school history. Indiana's Jorge Campillo won the event by four strokes with a 15-under 201.
Sophomore David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire), matched his opening round with another three-under 69 today as he gained 12 spots on the field to finish in a three way tie for eighth. For Ludow, who shot a three-under 213 (69-75-69), it was his second top-10 finish of the season.
Cairns began the day in a tie for 55th, but after his career low five-under 67 today climbed 31 spots into a tie for 24th. He ended the tournament at one-over 217 (70-80-67). Classmate Jean-Phillipe Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec) also tied for 24th following his two-under 70 today which left him at one-over 217 (75-72-70) for the tournament.
Senior David Markle (Shelbourne, Ontario / Centre Dufferin), who led the Golden Flashes to top three finishes each of the past two weeks, ended with a four-over 220 (78-70-72) in a tie for 40th after shooting an even par 72 this afternoon.
Competing as an individual, senior Tom Ballinger (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield St. Peter's) was one stroke of his best finish of the season, but still finished in a tie for 24th. Ballinger carded a one-over 73 on Sunday and totaled a one-over 217 (73-71-73) for the tournament.
Playing Purdue's Kampen Course, which is hosting the 2008 NCAA Championships, Kent State defeated No. 33 Michigan State by 11 stokes and was 12 strokes better than No. 18 Indiana and host Purdue. Ranked No. 5 Charlotte came in fifth, 16 strokes back of the Golden Flashes.
"I'm really impressed with the team right now," said Page, "The guys have all been working hard and it showed with the way we performed on a great course."
The Golden Flashes host the First Energy Invitational at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio next Saturday.
