Kent State track & field teams to make full squad debuts

KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State men's and women's track & field squads will compete as a full squad for the first time during the 2008 outdoor season at the Duke Invitational this weekend (April 4-5) at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Competition will run from 12 p.m. - 9:45 p.m. on Friday and 9:45 a.m. 6 p.m. Saturday.
Kent State's men's team was picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference's preseason poll, while the women's squad was tabbed to take eighth.
Several of KSU's sprinters and throwers have already competed this season.
Last Friday (March 28) at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C., sophomore Aiman Scullion clocked a time of 30 minutes, 31.46 to win his career debut in the 10,000-meter run.
Senior Stephanie Blackstone set a personal record by finishing the women's 10,000-meter run in 36:56.36 for fourth place, 14 seconds faster than her previous best time.
Five throwers opened the season with first-place finishes at the Early Bird Relays (March 22) in Cinciinati.
Senior John Harper won the discus throw with a toss of 53.57 meters, while classmate Jaroslaw Zakrzewski heaved the hammer 60.54 to take first in the event.
Winning the shot put was sophomore Evan Whiting with a mark of 16.35. Whiting also placed third in the discus, recording a throw of 48.88.
On the women's side, sophomore Effua Ampadu captured victory in the hammer by recording a throw of 48.12.
After redshirting the 2007-08 indoor season, junior LeVania Henderson got her outdoor season off to a hot start, tossing the shot put 14.78 for first place and taking third in the discus with a throw of 47.49.
Henderson finished behind sophomore Brittany Borrero in the discus, who took second with a mark of 49.37.
Freshman Ray Kaplin grabbed second in the javelin with a toss good for 51.82.
Finishing behind Borrero and Henderson in the discus was sophomore Samantha Fetter, who recorded a throw of 40.39 for fourth. Fetter also notched a third-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.19.
A throw of 44.34 gave sophomore Kearran Capers second place in the hammer.
Sophomore Anthony Connor placed third in the hammer with a mark of 53.52 in addition to a fifth-place finish in the discus and a toss of 47.
Redshirt freshman Matthew Pfleger tossed the hammer 51.47 for fifth and took sixth in the discus by recording a throw of 46.39.
