The Kent State men's & women's throwers, led by assistant coach Nathan Fanger, were a force to be reckoned with last weekend (April 4-5) at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., producing quite a few NCAA qualifications and personal records.
“Coach Fanger and his throws group had a great weekend,” said third-year head track & field coach Bill Lawson. “A fantastic effort this early in the season by the men's and women's throwing program. We're way ahead of where we were a year ago. We knew it was possible, we're just surprised that it's this early.”
Helping headline the parade of phenomenal performances was senior Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (Gdansk, Poland), who earned at least a regional qualifying mark and set a lifetime personal record by way of his 214-04 toss in the men's hammer throw, which was good enough for third place.
Continuing to establish himself as a force on the team, sophomore Evan Whiting (Port Clinton, Ohio/Port Clinton) won the discus and exceeded the regional qualifying distance with a heave of 169-00. Whiting also placed third in the shot, recording a distance of 56-08.
Junior Nia Henderson (Westland, Mich./Churchill) earned a share of the spotlight on the women's side by earning a regional qualification and capturing the shot put with a toss of 49-01 ½. Henderson garnered another solid finish in the discus, where she recorded a throw good for 155-09 and placed third, which qualified her for regionals in that event as well. A toss of 158-02 gave Henderson 10th in the hammer.
After suffering an ACL injury that ended her 2007 outdoor season early, sophomore Bekah Stoltz (Saugerties, N.Y./Columbia Falls) rebounded with a victory in the javelin and a regional qualification with her toss of 144-00.
Redshirt freshman Matthew Pfleger (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield) continued his evolution in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 187-01, good enough for fifth. Finishing right behind Pfleger was sophomore Anthony Connor (Columbus, Ohio), who scored a sixth-place finish by hurling the hammer 186-06.
Taking sixth in the women's hammer was sophomore Effua Ampadu (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin), tossing for a mark of 164-09, while classmate Brittni Borrero (Cumberland, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) recorded a 156-05 for 11th place. Borrero also took 11th in the discus with a throw of 140-00. Classmate Samantha Fetter (Darragh, Pa./Hempfield Area) threw the discus 135-02 for 14th.
