Golden Flashes fall one stroke short after Eastern Michigan's 288 on Sunday
NASHPORT, Ohio - The Kent State men's golf team placed second at the Mid-American Conference Championship with a four round total of 1172 to finish one stroke behind Eastern Michigan, which won its second straight team title. The Golden Flashes led after three rounds of play and shot a five-over 293 in today's final round, but fell out of the lead after the Eagles gained five strokes with an even par 288 on Sunday.
"Eastern Michigan had a really good round today," said Head Coach Herb Page, "We made some mistakes that cost us early so we're a bit disappointed, but I'm proud of the way our guys competed until the final hole."
Freshman John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson), who was named the MAC Player and Freshman of the Year, led four players in the top 10 for the Golden Flashes after firing a two-under 70 that included six birdies today. Hahn earned his fifth straight top 10 finish with a one-over 289 (74-73-72-70) that placed him third overall. He also received First Team and All-Tournament honors.
With birdies on holes 16 and 17 sophomore David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire), helped lead a late charge by the Golden Flashes. Ludlow, who had four birdies on the day, would take fifth place with a three-over 291 (74-73-70-74). He joined Hahn as a First Team All-MAC and All-Tournament Team selection.
In ninth place was senior David Markle (Shelbourne, Ontario / Centre Dufferin) who carded a three over 75 this afternoon. Markle, who was named First Team All-MAC, birdied holes two and seven as he played the first eight holes in two-under before taking a seven on the par three ninth. A one-over 37 on the back left him at seven-over 295 (76-72-72-75) for the tournament.
Second Team All-MAC honoree freshman Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) birdied two holes today and was at even par before bogeys on 17 and 18 gave him a two-over 74. Cairns captured his second straight and third top 10 finish of the year with a nine-over 297 (78-69-76-74), which put him in a four way tie for 10th.
Freshman Jean-Phillipe Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec), had two birdies today, but a double-bogey on nine and six other bogeys led to a six-over 78. Paiement finished the tournament tied for 29th with a four round total of 309 (79-74-78-78).
Toledo's Ciaran McAleavey shot a four-under 68 today to take individual medalist honors with a two-under 286 (70-74-74-68) he was followed by Peter Sauerbrei of Eastern Michigan, at one-under (74-70-73-70=217) and Hahn.
