Golden Flashes invited to play in Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview
KENT, Ohio - Behind the strength of a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championship this past year, the Kent State men's golf team begins its quest for the 2009 Championship this fall with a five tournament slate.
The fall schedule is highlighted by an invitation to the 2008 Ping/Golfweek NCAA Preview at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio in late September (28-30). Now in its 20th season, the 54-hole, 15-team event is held each fall at the site of the following spring's NCAA Division I Men's Championship.
"Playing in the Preview is always one of our goals," said Kent State coach Herb Page. "We haven't been there for a few years so we are really looking forward to getting back this fall. It's even more special because it's at Inverness, which makes it almost like a home tournament for us."
Likely the most competitive fall tournament in the country, the field includes Georgia, which finished the season No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, along with fellow top ten NCAA finishers USC, Oklahoma State, Clemson and Charlotte. Rounding out the field will be, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Alabama, Arizona State, Chattanooga, Texas A&M, Florida State and host team Toledo.
The only team to win the Preview and go on to capture the NCAA title the next spring was UNLV in 1997 and 1998.
The Golden Flashes will begin the season September 6-7 at the Maryland Intercollegiate held at River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, Md. The following weekend (September 13-14) Kent State heads to the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind. for a second consecutive season.
After The Preview on September 28-30, KSU will stay in the Midwest for the Windon Memorial October 5-6. Last season at the Windon, junior to be David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) shot a three-under 210 to finish tied for fifth as Kent State finished runner-up to team champion Northwestern by one stroke.
The Golden Flashes will then complete the fall season October 24-26 when they head south to Tennessee for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges for a fourth consecutive season. Kent State took fourth at last year's event as then freshman John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) tied for second with an eight-under 208.
