KSU Announces Flight 93 Week Of Education Activities

KENT, Ohio - With the beginning of football season - and the end of summer - just around the corner, Kent State University Athletic Department and the “93 cents for Flight 93” campaign have announced the schedule of events for a week of education entitled “Flight 93: An Education on Everyday Heroes” on the Kent campus the week of Sept. 8.
“This will be a truly a significant week for the Kent campus, the Kent community and Northeast Ohio,” KSU Athletic Director Laing Kennedy said. “It is important that we don't forget the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and we believe that the activities planned for our campus will go a long way toward keeping the memory of the 40 heroes on United Flight 93 alive.
“An event such as this one is important because it combines the educational mission of our University with an exceptional cause. It is our hope that this can be a model for other schools around the country to use.”
The weeklong event will encompass a wide range of interactive and educational activities and will culminate Sept. 13 with numerous activities surrounding the Golden Flashes' home-opening football game against Delaware State at 2:00 p.m. In addition to the special remembrance of Flight 93, Heroes' Day will also honor members of the armed forces as well as local police, fire and rescue squads.
Prior to the game, the Army Fast Track Jump team will deliver the game ball and the Air Force will conduct a fly-over following the national anthem. In addition, family members of the Flight 93 passengers and crew, members of the U.S. Army and a Wounded Warrior representative will be on hand for the coin toss involving a special Flight 93 commemorative coin.
Fans attending the game will have the opportunity to make a donation toward the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the KSU Ticket Office at (330) 672-2244. Fans should please note that the postgame concert and fireworks have been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict.
“From day one our focus has always been on the educational component during the week and the Heroes' Day celebration on Sept. 13,” Kennedy said. “I couldn't think of a better way to honor not only the passengers and crew of Flight 93, but also the local heroes with the activities surrounding our Sept. 13 football game.”
An initiative created by the HALO Foundation in partnership with The Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign, the “93 cents for Flight 93” campaign is a grass roots initiative designed to educate students while assisting in the fundraising efforts for the capital campaign to build the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pa., that will honor the 40 heroes of United Flight 93 who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.
