KENT, Ohio - The Kent State University Athletic Department is partnering with the “93 cents for Flight 93” campaign to present “Flight 93: An Education on Everyday Heroes” on the KSU campus the week of Sept. 8.
“When you think of the heroes of Flight 93 who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom, we are truly humbled to have Kent State play a significant role in honoring them,” KSU Athletic Director Laing Kennedy said. “Knowing its final flight path took Flight 93 over our campus brings a strong emotional tie to our close-knit community.”
The week-long event will encompass a wide range of interactive and educational activities including exhibits and displays at KSU's Memorial Athletic & Convocation Center, presentations from Paul Murdoch (the architect of the Flight 93 National Memorial) and Jeré Longman (author of Among the Heroes), appearances by family members of the passengers and crew from Flight 93 and showings of the movie United 93 on Sept. 11.
The event will culminate Sept. 13 with numerous activities surrounding the Golden Flashes' home-opening football game against Delaware State at 2:00 p.m. In addition to the special remembrance of Flight 93, Heroes' Day will also honor members of the armed forces as well as local police, fire and rescue squads. The day will conclude with a postgame concert. A portion of the proceeds from the game will go towards the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the KSU Ticket Office at (330) 672-2244.
“We view this as a great opportunity to not only honor our local everyday heroes, but to celebrate the courage of the passengers and crew members of Flight 93,” Kennedy said. “I know that the faculty, staff and students on the Kent State campus and the Kent community as a whole will be honored to pay tribute through the events during the week of Sept. 8.”
An initiative created by the HALO Foundation in partnership with The Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign, the “93 cents for Flight 93” campaign is a grass roots initiative designed to educate students while assisting in the fundraising efforts for the capital campaign to build the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pa. that will honor the 40 heroes of United Flight 93 who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.
