Golden Flashes allow just one goal for a third straight game
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Kent State soccer team surrendered just one goal for a third consecutive game, but were unable to find the back of the net themselves in a 1-0 loss at host Pittsburgh in a rainy contest at Founders Field this afternoon. The loss marked the second straight 1-0 defeat for the Golden Flashes which slipped to 2-3 on the year while the Panthers improved to 3-3.
The game stood close throughout the first half with Kent State attempting five shots to six for Pittsburgh.
The only score of the game came at the start of the second half when Laura Berbert scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out at 48:38. The Panthers would control the tempo the majority of the game, but shots on goal stood even at 4-4 despite a 13-7 edge by Pitt in shots taken.
“The game really could have gone either way today, said Head Coach Rob Marinaro, “They gave just a little more effort and we came up on the short end. We will just continue to work at it and try to figure out the right mixture for us.”
The Golden Flashes had two good looks at the goal in the final eight minutes, but shots by sophomore Kelly Heaton (Mississauga, Ontario / Our Lady-Mt. Carmel) and junior Catharine Marosszeky (Aurora, Ohio/Cardinal Carter) were saved by Pitt goalie Morie Kephart, who had four stops.
Kent State red-shirt freshman goalie Kelly Sherwood (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) made three saves in goal for KSU while playing all 90 minutes.
Kent State returns to action on Sunday at Michigan State. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
NOTES: The Golden Flashes have allowed one goal or less in four of their five games ... The goal was just the second Sherwood has allowed in 230 minutes this season.
