Golden Flashes looking for their seventh road win of the year
Kent State (9-6; 6-1 MAC) travels to Michigan (7-9; 2-2 Big Ten) on Wednesday for its final non-conference game of the season. The Golden Flashes have won seven of the last nine games and own a 6-3 record away from home this season. A win by KSU would give the program its most road wins since the 2000 season.
One of only two players in the Mid-American Conference ranked in the top 10 is both goals (T-sixth) and assists (T-fifth) junior Rachel Miller (Bathurst, Australia / MacKillop College) has been a catalyst for the KSU offense in the last few games. Miller had a hand in all four goals scored by Kent State last week and has recorded at least one point in the last six games.
Her success is due in large part to the Golden Flashes penalty corner unit which has helped produced their last six goals scored. Senior captain Allison Kittelberger (Webster, N.Y. / Schroeder) is the injector on the unit and leads the team with eight assists while adding two goals. The stopper, junior Nicole Leach (San Diego, Calif. / Mira Mesa), has seven assists for the year. Her production nearly doubles her previous career total of four heading into the season.
Sophomore Debbie Bell (Hamilton, New Zealand / Waikato) continues to make her way up the KSU career scoring list after recording her 40th career goal in last Saturday's 3-2 win over Missouri State. Bell, who is tied for fifth in the nation with 1.27 goals per game this season, currently ranks ninth all-time at Kent State in career goals scored. Julie Sutera (1991-94) is just ahead on the list with 41 goals.
The Golden Flashes close out the regular season with three straight home games starting on Saturday with Central Michigan.
Scouting Michigan:
Kent State is the second straight MAC opponent for the Wolverines which posted a 3-2 win at Miami on Sunday behind Meredith Way's 67th minute goal. Way leads the team and ranks second in the Big Ten with 15 goals scored this season. This is the first home game for Michigan since Sept. 27.
Last year's meeting was decided with an overtime goal by sophomore Carla Johl (Hamilton, New Zealand / Waikato) in the 74th minute that gave Kent State a 1-0 win. This is the fifth straight season the two teams have met with Michigan holding a 9-3-3 edge all-time.
The game will get underway at 3:00 pm. Follow the action live through Michigan's GameTracker
