Sophomore Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio) led all scorers with 19 points, including 16 in the first half, thanks to a 5-of-6 shooting effort from three-point range. Jamilah Humes (Saginaw, Mich.) added eight points in the setback.
"We didn't play well enough for long enough to win the game," said head coach Bob Lindsay. "We need to play a full game of good basketball."
Marshall (1-2) was led by Tynikki Crook's 13 points, with nine coming in the second half, while Chantelle Handy added 11 points.
The contest was close throughout with seven lead changes, and with Stutzman's fifth three-pointer of the game at 7:55 to go in the second half, Kent State tied the game for the eighth time. But from there KSU went cold, going without a field goal for the next six and a half minutes as Marshall led by as much as 11 points. Kent State shot just 27 percent in the second half (6-of-22).
Stutzman's hot streak fueled the Flashes in the first half. Trailing six, 19-13 with 8:16 to go in the first half, Stuzman ignited a 7-0 run with a three-pointer. That run grew into a 17-5 streak to end the first period, with Stuzman providing 13 points, including the run's final eight tallies.
Despite only a 33-32 rebounding margin, Marshall turned 12 offensive rebounds into 10 points, eight of which came in the second half. Marshall also outscored Kent State 25-11 in points off turnovers.
Kent State tried to rally late, but back-to-back shots by Humes were blocked by Marshall's Crook late in the game to stall the Golden Flashes. Marshall finished with nine blocked shots.
Stephanie Gibson (North Canton, Ohio) continued her steady play at the guard spot, dishing out five of Kent State's 10 assists and improving her season assist/turnover ratio to 7.5. Yoshica Spears (Nome, Texas) led the Flashes with a game-high eight rebounds.
The Golden Flashes return to action Tuesday to take on Florida Atlantic in the final road game of Kent State's season-opening four-game road series. KSU will begin a five-game home stand Sunday, Nov. 29 against Rhode Island.
