Defense Dominates First Scrimmage

The defense dominated Kent State's first scrimmage of the spring, limiting the offense to just over 200 yards in 90 minutes of nearly continuous action Saturday morning at Dix Stadium.
The defensive effort was highlighted by seven sacks as part of 15 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Senior linebacker Anthony Mirando had four stops, while junior linebacker Cobrani Mixon recorded three tackles, including a pair of TFL and a tip that led to a Josh Pleasant interception.
Sophomore quarterback Giorgio Morgan was 6-for-12 for 57 yards, while senior signal caller Anthony Magazu was 4-for-11 for 31 yards. Junior running back Alan Vanderink rushed 14 times for 58 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown scamper.
“I was a little disappointed our offensive line didn't play better,” head coach Doug Martin said. “They'd played well up to this point, but didn't do a good job of protecting the quarterback today.
“I thought our defense played hard and they played fast. At this point you expect them to be a little ahead of the offense. I look for both sides to be much improved when we scrimmage again next Saturday.”
In a scary moment midway through the scrimmage, junior running back Andre Flowers was taken off the field on a stretcher after a helmet-to-helmet hit that caused numbness in his extremities. However, he never lost consciousness and the numbness began to dissipate shortly after being taken off the field. He was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
The Flashes have seven more practices left before wrapping the spring up with a scrimmage April 24 that will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
