No. 45 Golden Flashes finish in front of four other high ranked teams
BRYAN, Tex. - Shortened to just 36-holes due to thunderstorms throughout the region yesterday morning, Kent State finished in sixth place at the 2009 Aggie Invitational after shooting a final round 388 Sunday afternoon. Ranked 45th in the country, the Golden Flashes placed ahead of four teams ranked ahead of them while navigating the par-72 Traditions Golf Club.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after heavy thunderstorms forced the opening round to be cancelled. The course played much more difficult than in Saturday's first round, when lift and replace rules were in effect and 39 players shot par or better. Only seven players in the field shot par or better on Sunday and the average score was more than five strokes higher at 78.05.
“The gusty winds and difficult conditions made it tough for us throughout the day, said Head Coach Herb Page, “However we had our opportunities, but some sloppy play and a few mistakes came back to hurt us in the end.”
Amongst the tougher Sunday conditions, sophomore John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) shot a team best 75 making three birdies in the round. Tying for 11th overall he earned his 15th career top 20 finish with a two round total of 144 (69-75). Sophomore Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) backed Hahn up with a 76 on Sunday making three birdies and recording a par on the final four holes. He was tied for 18th in the field with a 147 (71-147).
Freshman Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario (Highland Secondary) made seven pars on the front nine and carded final round 77 to tied for 26th overall with a 36-hole total of 149 (72-77). Completing the scoring for KSU was senior Nick Latimer (Brooklyn, Ohio / Brooklyn) and sophomore J.P. Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec) who each shot an 80 on Sunday. Latimer ended the event with a 156 (76-80), while Paiement had a 154 (74-80).
Junior David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) posted a 155 (71-84) after struggling with an 84 on Sunday.
No. 4-ranked Oklahoma State overcame a big Texas A&M lead on the closing holes to win the event by three strokes. The Cowboys finished at six-under for the tournament (714), followed by A&M (717), Ohio State (741), No. 16 TCU (744), San Diego State (744), Kent State (745), Lamar (746), No. 12 Texas Tech (749), New Mexico (749), Baylor (761), Wichita State (763) and Kansas (780).
Oklahoma State sophomore Rickie Fowler birdied three of the final four holes to claim individual honors with a six-under total of 65-73=138.
The Golden Flashes will take a week off before heading to the 2009 MAC Championship April 30 - May 2 in Indianapolis, Ind.
