Kent State Sweeps MAC Field Athlete of the Week Awards

CLEVELAND - Junior Matthew Pfleger (Garrettsville, Ohio/James A. Garfield) and freshman Diana Dumitrescu (Campulung, Romania/LNPA Campulung Muscel) were named the men's and women's Mid-American Conference field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday (April 29).
At the 100th Drake Relays, Dumitrescu competed in the Decathlon and scored 5,350 points to take 3rd place. She was also the top collegiate athlete in the event, finishing behind a former Olympian and former collegiate star. She also captured a provisional NCAA Outdoor Regional berth. In the heptathlon, Demitrescu beat the record of 5,307 points set in 2000 by '09 KSU Varsity "K" inductee Aja Farris. She also won the shot put in the heptathlon with a toss of 13.16 meters.
At the Gina Relays, Pfleger finished third in the hammer throw (61.08 meters) and passed NCAA regional qualifying standard for the fifth time this season.
The Kent State men's and women's track teams return to action this weekend (May 1-2) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take part in the Jesse Owens Classic.
