Hudson, Ohio product the first KSU sophomore honored since Ben Curtis
NORMAN, Okla. - In just two years Kent State sophomore John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) has become one of the most decorated golfers in a program steeped in tradition. This week he picked up yet another award as he was named to the PING Honorable Mention All-American team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Hahn, who was also selected to the Midwest All-Region squad along with teammate Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario), becomes the 14th different individual and the 21st All-American for the Golden Flashes, which claimed their 17th Mid-American Conference title this season.
“What a great honor for John, I am extremely pound and happy for him,” said Head Coach Herb Page, who has coached 19 All-Americans in his 31 years at the helm, “He is an exceptional talent with unlimited potential. The sky really is the limit for him as continues to work and develop his game.”
One of just five golfers named to the MAC All-Academic team, Hahn was voted as MAC Golfer of the Year for a second straight season in 2009. This season he averaged 72.1 strokes per round and won two tournaments, including the MAC Championship at Brickyard Crossing. After tying for third at the NCAA Northeast Regional, he ended the season with six top 10 finishes.
Hahn, who was rated 39th in the final Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and 40th by Golfstat.com, is just the second KSU sophomore to receive All-American recognition and the first since current PGA professional Ben Curtis did so in 1998.
Also a sophomore, Cairns earns his first All-Region honor after claiming seven top 20 finishes and a .698 finishing percentage on the year. A First Team All-MAC selection, he averaged 73.4 strokes per round, including 72.9 in the eight spring events. The runner-up at the MAC Championship, he is the only KSU golfer to play in all 79 rounds over the past two seasons. The GCAA All-Region teams consist of the top 25 individuals in each of the six regions (Midwest, East, West, Central, Northeast, Southeast) nationwide.
“I am thrilled for Brett, who has worked hard and performed well all season,” said Page, the 2009 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year, “This award recognizes him as one of the best players in the region and will help give the national acknowledgment he deserves.”
This marks the second consecutive season Kent State has had an All-American selection and two golfers honored with All-Region accolades. Hahn joined 2008 KSU grad and Honorable Mention All-American, David Markle on the All-Region team last year.
