Golden Flashes return to action in March
Alpharetta, Ga. — In a tournament field that featured 11 of
the nation's top 40 teams, No. 34 Kent State finished in a tie for
ninth place in its final fall tournament of the season. The
Golden Flashes shot a final round, 294 at the prestigious United
States Collegiate Championship to bring their 54-hole score to 889
(294-301-294). The team will return to action in the spring
looking to claim a third straight Mid-American Conference title.
"Overall we didn't have a bad fall and I think we have
yet to see the best out of this team," said Director of
Golf/Head Coach Herb Page. "We still have some things
we'll continue to work on in the coming months to get us
ready once the spring season gets underway."
With its performance on Tuesday, Kent State finished the event tied
with one and ahead of two other teams ranked in the top 40.
The Golden Flashes match No. 35 Florida State with an 889 while
finishing five shots ahead of No. 11 Washington and 16 in front of
No. 40 Clemson.
"We got it going a little bit early making four birdies on
hole No.1, but we didn't finish well and it ended up costing
us a few strokes," said Page.
Along with senior John Hahn (Las
Vegas, Nev. / Hudson [Ohio]) freshman Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario) led the Golden Flashes as
each shot a one-over 73 at The Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside
Course on Tuesday. Pendrith closed out just his second career
collegiate tournament with a team best T-20 finish. Starting
off the first tee he birdied Nos. 1 and 2 to account for two of his
four birdies on the day. He ended the tournament with a
three-over 219 (72-74-73). Hahn, meanwhile was set to start
the day tied for 11th, but had his second round 71 disqualified
yesterday. He quickly recovered from the mishap making birdie
on his first hole today. He then added two more on Nos. 8 and
9 to help account for his one-over total.
The rest of the Golden Flashes final round total was made up of a
pair of 74s from junior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) and freshman Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario). Hughes had the second best
individual showing of the tournament tying for 27th with a 54-hole
score of 221 (74-73-74). He too made birdie on No. 1 before
adding another on No. 12. The top finisher in three of the
Golden Flashes five fall tournaments he will head into the spring
with a 72.6 scoring average. Conners meanwhile was cruising
through his first 10 holes today making two birdies and eight
pars. He then ran into some trouble with bogeys on four of
his next six holes before posting two straight pars to end the
day. His 10-over 226 (75-77-74) put him in a tie for 50th in
the 78-man field.
Sophomore Kevin Miller
(Dover, Ohio / Sugarcreek Garaway) made it four out five Kent State
golfers that birdied No. 1 in the final round. He would also
birdie No. 15 and the famed 17th as he recorded a four-over 76 on
Tuesday and a 230 (77-77-76) for the
tournament.
No. 17 Georgia Tech ran away with the team title shooting a
28-under 836. The tournament hosts finished 27 shots ahead of
No. 3 UCLA which was second with an 863. James White of
Georgia Tech claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under
204.
