HERSHEY, Pa. - Kent State went 1-2 Saturday at the Hershey Duals, with a 25-10 victory over North Carolina to end its day. The Golden Flashes fell to a pair of ranked opponents with a 25-12 setback against Virginia Tech and a 18-13 loss to Virginia.
"We just didn't do well fighting to get into position in those first two duals," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We have the talent and the ability to beat these top tier teams, we just need to get better prepared. I feel like we should be 4-1 right now instead of 2-3."
Despite a double-digit loss to the Hokies, there was a silver lining in the performance of junior Nic Bedelyon (125). In a battle of two Top 10 wrestlers, Bedelyon tore apart Jarrod Garnett 15-0, sealing a technical fall 45 seconds into the third period.
"Nic just rolled right over him," Andrassy said. "Today was the best I've ever seen him wrestle."
The Golden Flashes also got a convincing victory from junior Dustin Kilgore (197) who scored a 13-4 major decision over Chris Penny.
Junior heavyweight Brendan Barlow knocked off No. 12 David Marone 3-1. However, Virginia Tech won all seven weight classes from 133 to 184.
The pivotal match against the Cavaliers came at 133 pounds, when freshman Tyler Small led Joe Spisak 2-0 with 15 seconds left. Spisak then scored a reversal that put Small on his back for a five-point move.
Bedelyon, Kilgore and Barlow all won again against Virginia, as did junior Ross Tice (165) with a 7-3 decision over Charles Miller. The Cavaliers had won four straight matches from 133 to 157 prior to Tice's match.
"Brendan Barlow wrestled much better today," Andrassy said. "No one even came close to taking him down in three matches."
Kilgore scored his second major decision (9-1) of the day against Virginia, while Barlow knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent (Jack Danilkowicz) for the second time with a 3-2 decision. No. 16 Nick Nelson nipped Chase Skonieczny 3-2 at 141, while Tommy Sasfy (149) dropped a 2-0 decision to Derek Valenti.
Bedelyon, Kilgore and Barlow all completed 3-0 days against the Tar Heels as the Flashes captured 7-of-10 matches. Bedelyon improved to 5-0 with an 11-2 major decision over Jacob Corrill. Kilgore moved to 9-0 on the year and extended his dual meet winning streak to 35 with an 11-4 win over Zac Bennett.
"Against North Carolina, our guys knew we were better and I felt like we were more aggressive because of that," Andrassy said.
