KENT, Ohio - Kent State senior John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev. / Hudson H.S. [Ohio]) has been included amongst a group of 16 of the top amateur players in the United States that have been invited by the U.S. Golf Association to attend a practice session for the 2011 Walker Cup.
The practice session will be held the first week in January at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla. The session will provide an opportunity for team-building, alternate shot practice and will allow prospective team members to meet captain Jim Holtgrieve and the USGA selectors.
The Walker Cup comprises the leading amateur golfers of the United States and Great Britain and Ireland and will be played next fall from Sept. 10-11 at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Scotland, the sixth oldest course in the world.
Steve Smyers, chair of the USGA's International Team Selection Committee, shared the list of invites with Golfweek. Smyers said that players not invited to the session still will be considered for the 10-man 2011 Walker Cup team. "I fully expect someone not (at Old Memorial) to play their way onto the team," he said.
A two-time All-American at the collegiate level, Hahn has been highly successful on the amateur circuit the past two summers. Currently ranked 19th in the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com U.S. Rankings, he won the prestigious 107th Western Amateur match-play championship in 2009. Just this past year he reached the match-play sweet 16 at the U.S. Amateur after finishing tied for 13th in stroke play.
