The First Pitch
Kent State will take part in its second and last four-game series of the season this weekend when it travels to Manhattan, Kan. to take on Kansas State.
First pitch of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. (4 p.m. EST) Friday, with the double header set to begin on Saturday at 12 p.m. (1 p.m. EST). The second game of the double header is scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest Saturday. The series finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. (1 p.m. EST) on Sunday.
The Wildcats won the only meeting between the two teams on a neutral field March 1, 2002, by a score of 9-4.
Kent State enters the series 5-5 on the year, having lost two-of-three last weekend at the Music City Classic. They Flashes lost to Vanderbilt 7-1 on Friday night while Indiana held the Kent State offense silent for a 3-0 loss on Saturday, the second time the Golden Flashes have been shut out this season. In the finale for Kent State against Illinois State, the Flashes scored seven runs in the fifth inning and held on for the 7-4 win. In the frame, sophomore Jimmy Rider recorded two singles, a run scored and an RBI. Fifth-year senior Jared Humphreys added his second triple of the season in five at-bats, driving in two runs.
Sophomore David Starn improved to 2-1 for the Golden Flashes, allowing three runs on five hits and a career-high six strikeouts. In the first five innings, Starn only allowed an infield single before the Redbirds scored a trio of runs in the sixth.
Meanwhile, Kansas State enters the game with a 9-2 record, winners of eight of its last nine. Last weekend at the Bright House Invitational in DeLand, Fla., the Wildcats defeated Stetson, Notre Dame and Harvard. Junior Carter Jurica led Kansas State with a 6-for-15 weekend (.400) with five runs scored and four RBI. In the Wildcat's win over Notre Dame, sophomore Evan Marshall went seven innings, allowing two runs and nine hits and four strikeouts.
For the season, freshman Blair DeBord leads the team with a .514 batting average (18 hits in 35 at-bats) with five doubles, four runs scored and four RBI. Jurica leads the team with 22 hits in 49 at-bats (.449), also leading the team in doubles (6), triples (2) and RBI (20). On the mound, Marshall leads the Wildcats with a 1.71 ERA and a 2-0 record in three starts. He has allowed 22 hits and four earned runs in 21 innings pitched.
Senior Ryan Daniel has won all three starts with a 2.81 ERA, having allowed five runs in 16 innings pitched.

After this weekend, Kent State will have played nine of it's 14 games against 2009 NCAA opponents. Western Kentucky the season-opening weekend, Vanderbilt last weekend and Kansas State this weekend all made the finals of their respective NCAA regions last year. Indiana was knocked out of the NCAA's last season by Vanderbilt.

The Coaches
Kent State head coach Scott Stricklin is currently in his sixth season as a head coach with an overall record of 188-108. He has never faced the Wildcats.
Now in his seventh season overall, Kansas State head coach Brad Hill has a 202-148-3 record with the Wildcats. It is his 16th season as an NCAA head coach, he has a mark of 620-239-3. Before coming to Kansas State, Hill was the head coach for nine seasons at Central Missouri State, leading the Mules to the NCAA Division II regionals every year. Central Missouri State captured seven regional titles under Hill and the 2003 Division II national championship.
Next Up
Kent State will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the annual Coca-Cola Classic. The Golden Flashes will play the Columbia Lions and the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday (March 19) and the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday (March 20) in the round robin tournament. Kent State will play one of those three teams on Sunday afternoon (March 21).
