NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Kent State junior southpaw Kyle Hallock gave up three runs in the top of the third and Indiana held off any KSU rally attempts in a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon (March 6).
Kent State falls to 4-5 while Indiana improves to 4-5 on the season.
"We just didn't produce anything offensively," Kent State head coach Scott Stricklin said. "Indiana's pitchers did a good job of keeping us off balance. When you can't score runs, you can't win."
Hallock gave up three runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings of work to fall to 0-1 on the year. Freshman George Roberts led the team offensively with two hits and three at-bats, while sophomore Travis Shaw extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
"George had a couple hits, which is good to see. He was aggressive at the plate," Stricklin said.
Drew Leininger improved to 1-0 on the year in three starts for Indiana, surrendering only five hits and three walks over 7.2 innings.
Both teams went scoreless through two innings before the Hoosiers exploded for three runs in the third. With one out, Micah Johnson singled to center and advanced to second when Brian Lambert walked. Jerrud Sabourin then plated both runners with a double and scored when Michael Earley added a two-out double.
The Flashes had at least one base runner in each of the last seven innings but failed to score. In the eighth, Kent State loaded the bases with two outs, but junior Jordan Lucas struck out to end the Golden Flashes threat.
Kent State tried to rally in the ninth when junior Ben Klafczynski singled to begin the frame, but three-straight Flashes struck out to end the game.
Kent State returns to action tomorrow against Illinois State. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. CST (1 p.m. EST).
