Hughes Leads Golden Flashes To Fifth At Ohio State?s Robert Kepler

Kent State sophomore finishes tied for seventh after final round 70
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A final round 70 by sophomore Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) led the Kent State men's golf team to a 293 team score on Sunday and a fifth place finish at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State at the Scarlet Course. Paced by Hughes who tied for seventh, the Golden Flashes finished with a 26-over 878 (293-292-293) on the par 71 layout.
Tied for 16th as the day began, Hughes climbed into the top ten after he made birdie on holes No. 3, 4 and 6. The 2009 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year followed bogies at Nos. 7 and 10 with two more birdies on 11 and 12 that put him at three-under for the day. A double-bogey six on the par 4, 14th moved him back to one-under for the day where he would finish up. His best round of the tournament pushed Hughes up nine places on the leader board and earned him his fourth top ten of the season. With a three-over 213 (73-73-70) total he tied for seventh overall.
After posting a 225 in his previous three tournaments at the Scarlet Course, junior John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev. / Hudson [Ohio]) work his way to a seven-over 220 (74-73-73) this weekend. The All-American birdied two holes in his round of 73 on Sunday, including the par 5, 12th for the third consecutive round. He finished tied for 15th along with freshman Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio / Sugarcreek Garaway). Tied for 10th at the start of the day, Miller started slow with a double-bogey on hole No. 1. A bogey on No. 6 and another double on nine place him at five-over at the turn. The freshman would regroup on the back nine making a birdie on No. 10 followed by eight straight pars to close out the round. He too finished with a seven-over 220 (71-74-75).
Junior Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario / Holy Trinity) matched Miller with a 75 on Sunday to complete the scoring for the Golden Flashes. Sitting at three-over when he made the turn, Cairns took another bogey on No. 10 before an eagle on No. 12 dropped him back to two-over for the day. He then bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16 as he finished four-over for the round. His 54-hole score of 222 (75-72-75) placed him tied for 21st for the tournament
Junior J.P. Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec / Polyvalente St. Joseph), recorded a 77 on Sunday as he finished with a 233 (75-81-77) and tied for 58th for the weekend. Playing as an individual, freshman Isaac Charette (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) shot a final round 80 and a 54-hole total of 233 (72-81-80) as he also tied for 58th.
Tied with Penn State after two rounds, Eastern Michigan claimed a two stoke victory. The Eagles shot a final round 286 and won the event for the first time ever with a nine-over 861 (287-288-286).
Kevin Foley of Penn State added two shots to his 36-hole lead for a four stroke victory. Foley carded an eight-under 205 (69-68-68).
Kent State returns to action in Texas next weekend at the Aggie Invitational Saturday and Sunday April 17 and 18.
