Eight Flashes Named to Indoor Track and Field All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND - Five women and three men were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field teams announced Wednesday afternoon (April 14). The eight total athletes on the squad if the most selections of any team in the conference.
Seniors Andrew Carnes, Kelly Gephart and Jessica Lhotsky were named to the team with juniors Destin Heasley, Allison Krupko and Kelly Gephart. Redshirt sophomore Aaron Crabtree and sophomore Diana Dumitrescu round out the Kent State contingent.
"At Kent State, we have a philosophy to have the best students and athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championship," said Director of Track and Field/CC Bill Lawson. "It was a great job by these student-athletes for these academic awards. We are very proud of them and that is what we strive for, excellence in academics and athletics."
Carnes (4.0 GPA in exercise physiology) was named to the academic all-conference team for the first time in his Kent State career. Carnes took sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:47.13 to help the men's team finish third at the MAC Championships. Carnes also recorded the second-fastest time in the MAC this season in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:29.57.
Gephart (3.51 GPA in exercise physiology) made the Academic All-MAC team for the second-straight indoor season. She was a member of distance medley relay team that placed third at the MAC Championships with a time of 11:48.13. For the season, she recorded the team's fourth-fastest 3,000-meter run time by clocking a 10:31.31 at the MAC Championships.
This is Lhotsky's (3.61 GPA in exercise and health physiology) third appearance on the academic team, also making an appearance during the 2009 Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field seasons. She captured MAC gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.22 and the following week provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a team season-best time of 2:07.81 at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Heasley (3.59 GPA in zoology) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships three times in the 800-meter run with a top time of 1:48.99 at the Alex Wilson Invitational. He also captured MAC gold twice in the 800 meters 1:50.84 and as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team (3:17.37) to be named MAC Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer. This is the second-straight indoor season Heasley has been named academic all-conference.
Krupko (3.94 GPA in speech pathology and psychology) has been named to the Academic All-MAC team for the third time, earning the honor is cross country for the 2008 and 2009 cross country seasons. She recorded the team's third-fastest 5,000-meter run time with a 18:14.40 at the Doug Raymond Invitational.
It is the second-straight academic honor for Lizarribar (3.69 GPA in biology and pre-med), who was named to the academic all-conference team in the fall for cross country. Lizarribar set a new school standard in the 5,000-meter run by clocking a 17:00.50 at the Meyo Invitational and took seventh in the 5,000 at the MAC Championships with a time of 17:36.51. She also posted the team's top time in the 3,000-meter this season, finishing in 10:01.46 at the Akron Dual.
This is the first honor for Crabtree (3.45 GPA in criminal justice), who is in his first year with Kent State after transferring from Ohio State. He placed sixth in the weight throw at the MAC Championships with a toss of 59'-7.75" (18.18). He also had the conferences 10th-best shot put toss at the Akron Dual with a throw of 53'-1" (16.18).
Finally, All-American pentathlete Dumitrescu (3.30 GPA in journalism) will add another award to her already illustrious Kent State career. She finished eighth with a school-record 4,055 points at the NCAA Championships. In the long jump at the NCAA's, she also set the school record in the long jump (19'-9.75"). She also won a MAC Championship in the pentathlon and tallied 30.5 points to be named MAC Women's Most Valuable Performer in helping KSU win it's second indoor conference championship.
