DES MOINES, Iowa - After finishing as an All-American at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon more than a month ago, sophomore Diana Dumitrescu has, for the most part, not competed during the 2010 outdoor season for Kent State.
Welcome back Diana.
Dumitrescu is currently in second place after four events in the heptathlon with a personal record of 3,403 points, just 182 points behind Olympian Diana Pickler at the 2010 Drake Relays Wednesday (April 21).
"It is the most consistent combined event she has put together in her career. She had a very strong hurdle race and a good high jump," Director of Track and Field/CC Bill Lawson said. "She is the first collegiate by 227 points."
In the first four individual events, Dumitrescu captured a trio of third-place finishes and claimed the title in the shot put. She opened up with a time of 14.31 in the 100 hurdles before clearing a the bar at 5'-6.5" (1.69 meters) in the high jump.
Little did everyone know, the best was yet to come for Dumitrescu.
She claimed the heptathlon shot put title with a personal-best distance of 43'-10.75" (13.38 meters) before finishing the day with a PR in the 200 meters with a time of 25.15.
Dumitrescu has three remaining events in the heptathlon beginning tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. She begins the day in the long jump and followed by the javelin. She closes out the competition in the 800 meters. Live results will be available on the Drake athletic web site.
