Kent State junior's 62 is the lowest score in the country this season
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Following a weekend in which he shot the lowest round in the nation this season with a 10-under 62, Kent State men's golfer Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario / Holy Trinity) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week (April 22) for a third time this season.
In a 12-team field that included five top 25 teams, Cairns shot a four-under 213 (78-62-72) to finish tied for eighth at the Aggie Invitational. It was his fifth top 10 finish of the season. Playing the Traditions Golf Club, the weekend was highlighted by a record breaking second round 62 which set the KSU mark for lowest individual round previously held by Ryan Yip with a 63 at the 2005 MAC Championship and Rick Meeker at the 1968 MAC Championship. Cairns rolled home nine birdies and one eagle against one bogey as he posted the tournament's best round in the nationally rank field by three strokes.
Ranked No. 93 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings and No. 95 by Golfstat.com, Cainrs in the only MAC golfer ranked in the top 100 of both this season. He has a 72.5 scoring average this year, including 14 rounds of par or better.
The Golden Flashes return to action next weekend at the 2010 MAC Championship. The tournament runs April 30-May 2 and takes place at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. KSU won its 17th team title with a 19-stroke victory at last season's championship.
