COLUMBUS, Ohio - Both sophomore Audrey Maheu and freshman Steve Fischer recorded personal bests in the men's and women's 1500 meter run, respectively, while the throwers had a strong showing on day one of the Jesse Owens Track Classic Friday (April 30).
"Audrey Maheu ran great," said head coach Bill Lawson. "It was a very good run for her in getting the lifetime PR of 4:26.41, the third-fastest time in school history. It was also a big PR for Fisher, running 3:51.9 in the men's 1500. It was a strong run and he is moving into the right direction two weeks out from the MAC Championship."
Maheu and Fischer finished sixth and 18th, respectively.
In the men's javelin throw, sophomore Brian Florek and junior Raymond Kaplin took third and 11th, respectively, with throws of 210'-07" (64.20 meters) and 174'-06" (53.18 meters).
"Florek had a pretty good throw in the javelin after tough conditions last week at Penn. It was similar conditions here with terrible head winds to make it hard to keep his grip in the event. It was very strong throw, his second best of the year. He is right where we want him. He hasn't been overthrowing so I think we will see a big result in the next two weeks," Lawson said.
In the men's hammer throw, redshirt junior Matthew Pfleger placed seventh (205'-02" 62.54 meters) while senior Eric James took ninth (200'-10" 61.22 meters).
"Pfleger and Eric James continue to be very consistent. I think when Coach Fanger breaks up the heavy training two weeks for now and for regionals, those guys will be knocking out of the ballpark with good throws," Lawson said.
Freshman Domenica Rossi took ninth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12'-7.5" (3.85 meters) while freshman Sara Ocypok finished seventh in the women's javelin with a distance of 136'-07" (41.63 meters).
"Sara Oczypok had a good throw and continues to move in the right direction. Ray Kaplin also had a good throw, beating the second Akron athlete on the men's side, Lawson said. "We're starting to shore things up and I think we will be in a very good position two weeks from now sat MACs."
Kent State returns to action tomorrow on the final day of the Jesse Owens Track Classic. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m.
"We're just looking for good weather and great performances tomorrow," Lawson said.
