EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore Diana Dumitrescu sits in 10th after day one in the heptathlon while senior Brittni Borrero finished her collegiate career with a 13th place finish in the discus throw.
"In the heptathlon, Diana Dumitrescu has had a good day as she is sitting 10th overall," said Director of Track and Field/CC Bill Lawson. "She probably had an average 100 hurdles, high jump and 200 meters but a really good shot put performance."
Sitting in 14th after the 100 hurdles and high jump, Dumitrescu shot up the leader board with a third in the shot put with a throw of 43'-1.0" (13.13 meters). She finished the day 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.62. Dumitrescu sits in 10th place with 3,296 points after day one, just 18 points and two spots behind the coveted All-American eighth place.
"Diana has a great opportunity to move forward tomorrow and get in the top eight like she did at the indoor championships. She is in a good position for tomorrow, as she is healthy, well rested and in good spirits," Lawson said.
Finally, Borrero fought off tough weather conditions and took 13th in the discus with a throw of 161'-05" (49.21 meters), defeating the only other competitor from the Mid-American Conference.
"Brittni got a tough draw," Lawson explained. "When the first flight came out, we had a downpour out here so she warmed up and threw in a heavy rain with cool temperatures. She was fourth after that flight but as luck would have it, the sun came out and it warmed up for the second flight and the majority of scorers came from that group."
After the day, Lawson put a successful Kent State career in perspective for Borrero.
"Overall, Brittni was ranked 24th coming in and she finished 13th, so a great move forward by her. Overall, a great season and career for Brittni Borrero and for her to culminate her time at Kent State in Eugene, one of the most storied track and field places in America, was a huge thrill.
"She was pleased how she performed with the conditions during the first flight and she represented Kent State very well," Lawson added.
