Kent State Track & Field Teams Make Strides at Tune-Up

KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State men's & women's indoor track teams readied for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships by competing in the Kent State Tune-Up Saturday (Feb. 19) at the Field House.
Top performers of the day included sophomore Melissa Sawnor (Rochester, N.Y.) who took first place in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:56.81.
Freshman Melissa Kurzdorfer (Lancaster, N.Y.) won the women's weight throw with a toss of 59'-10.25" (18.24m).
Freshman Joh'vonnie Mosley (Youngstown, Ohio) won the women's shot put with a career-best throw of 50'-2.00" (15.29m) while Kurzdorfer took third with a mark of 47'-5.75" (14.47m). Mosley's toss ranks seventh in the Kent State record books.
Freshman Erica Hutson (Akron, Ohio) finished third in the 400-meter dash clocking in at 56.37 while sophomore teammate Kristen Hutchings (Wadsworth, Ohio) placed fourth with a time of 58.41.
Competing strong in the 60-meter hurdles was second place finisher senior Ava Haynes (Beachwood, Ohio) with a time of 8.75 and fourth place finisher junior Diana Dumitrescu (Campulung, Arges Romania) with a time of 8.99.
Senior Audrey Maheu (Bristolville, Ohio) won the 800-meter run with a career-best time of 2:10.83 while junior Danielle Doughtery (Peninsula, Ohio) took third clocking in at 2:18.31. Maheu's time ranks eighth in Kent State history.
Freshman Katie Reiser (Wayne, Ohio) finished third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.72 while senior teammate Jerrica Manley (Blacklick, Ohio) finished seventh with a time of 8.01.
Finishing first and second in the women's 200-meter dash were seniors Shavae Wright (Lima, Ohio) with a time of 24.93 and Manley clocking in at 25.83.
Junior Kim Preston (Greenville, Pa.) and sophomore Domenica Rossi (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) finished first and second in the women's pole vault with jumps of 12'-11.75" (3.96m) and 12'-6.00" (3.81m). Preston's vault as a career best and puts her in second place on Kent State's all-time performance list.
Sophomore Keri Dantley (Imperial, Pa.) won the women's triple jump event with a leap of 37'-3.75" (11.37m).
The men excelled in the mile run taking three of the top five slots. Sophomore Kiplangat Tisia (Koiybey, Kenya) won the event with a time of 4:11.79. Freshman Andrew Goodwin (Celina, Ohio) and sophomore Michael Heller (Stow, Ohio) came in second and fifth with times of 4:16.15 and 4:18.18 respectively.
The men also dominated in the high jump. Sophomore Kenneth Agee (Shaker Heights, Ohio) placed second and matched his career best with a jump of 7'-0.25" (2.14m) while junior teammate Dean Wood (North Richmond, Australia) took third with a mark of 6'-8.75" (2.05m). Senior Michael Schober (Penfield, N.Y.) and junior Ruben Belen (Medina, Ohio) placed fourth and seventh respectively with jumps of 6'-6.75" (2.00m) and 6'-4.75" (1.95m).
Schober also finished third in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36.
Senior Destin Heasley (Massillon, Ohio) won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.70 and sophomore Joshua Schmidt finished second clocking in at 1:50.78.
Senior Matt Pfleger (Garrettsville, Ohio) placed fourth in the men's weight throw with a toss of 65'-0.75" (19.83m).
Senior Derek Hopkins (Toledo, Ohio) finished fourth in the men's pole vault with a jump of 15'-7.25" (4.76m).
Junior Steve McLean finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.35 while senior teammate Matt Moffett (Salem, Ohio) took sixth with a time of 22.45.
Sophomore Nathaniel Scales (Hilliard, Ohio) won the 60-meter dash clocking in at 6.83.
Junior Aaron Crabtree (Lucasville, Ohio) earned second place in the men's shot put with a throw of 55'-1.50" (16.8m).
Senior Michael Carrol (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) finished fourth in the men's triple jump with a leap of 45'-2.25" (13.77m).
The Golden Flashes will head to Bowling Green this weekend (Feb. 25-26) to compete in the 2011 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at Perry Field House.
