Dumitrescu Named MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND -- Kent State junior women's track & field athlete Diana Dumitrescu (Campulung Arges, Romania) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office today (March 4).
Dumitrescu, a journalism major carrying a 3.41 grade point average, was once again named MAC Women's Most Valuable Performer after earning a MAC three-peat in the women's pentathlon last weekend at the conference's indoor championships, totaling a season-best 4,009 points to win the event for the third time in as many years. She won the high jump portion with a mark of 5'-07.75" (1.72m), matching her career best jump. Dumitrescu captured first in the long jump portion with a leap of 18'-11.25" (5.77m) and also took first in the shot put portion with a career-best toss of 44'-00.50" (13.42m). She posted a season-best time of 8.90 in the 60-meter hurdles portion to finish second. Dumitrescu took ninth in the 800-meter run portion by clocking a 2:32.30. She also finished second in the women's high jump with a leap of 5'-07.00" (1.70m) and third in the women's triple jump with a jump of 39'-05.00" (12.01m).
Dumitrescu is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the pentathlon. The 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held next weekend (March 11-12) at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
