Kent State Ninth After Day One Of The Aggie Invitational

Cairns tied for 17th to lead Golden Flashes
BRYAN, Tex. — Up against a high caliber field that featured five teams ranked in the top 30, No. 37 Kent State finds itself in ninth place after the first two rounds of play at the 2011 Aggie Invitational. Under a count five format, the Golden Flashes totaled a team score of 764 with rounds of 388 and 376 at the par 72, 7146-yard Traditions Golf Club.
On the same course where he set a school record with a 62 last year, senior Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario/Holy Trinity) again paced the Golden Flashes on Saturday. Cairns shot rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 that has him tied for 17th overall. Starting on hole No. 10, Cairns was three over after three holes in round two, but played the final 15 holes in one-under to match Kent State's lowest individual round of the day. Fellow senior John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev. / Hudson [Ohio]) sits just one stroke back of Cairns with a 150 that included rounds of 74 and 76.
After opening with a first round 80, junior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) fought back with a 74 in the afternoon that included four birdies, eight pars and six bogeys. Sophomore Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio/Sugarcreek Garaway) also regroup in the second round backing up a first round 81 with a 73 in round two that was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5, 539 fifth hole. Both Hughes and Miller totaled 154 on the day and are tied for 37th.
Rounding out the Kent State scoring was sophomore Nathan Tarter (Mogadore, Ohio / Mogadore) and freshman Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario). Playing in his first tournament of the season, Tarter opened with a 78, but fell back with an 83 in round two for a 161 composite. Conners meanwhile shot an 80 in both rounds.
Host Texas A&M (729) holds an eight stroke lead over No. 1 Oklahoma State (737). The Cowboys Peter Uihlein, who won the 2010 U.S. Amateur last summer, is first individually with a two round score of 139 (72-67).
The tournament concludes with 18 holes tomorrow. Kent State will be paired with Texas and Oklahoma starting at 7:30 a.m. CST.
