CALGARY, Alta. - Kent State senior to be Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario / Highland Secondary) captured the prestigious Glencoe Invitational in impressive fashion over the weekend in Calgary.
The Team Canada member put together rounds of 69-73-69 (211, -5), finishing the tournament at five-under-par, three shots clear of Aaron Cockerill of Stony Mountain, Man. One shot back of the lead heading into the final round, Hughes banged in six birdies to cancel bogeys at the third, fourth and 12th holes to fashion a day's best three-under-par 69.
Hughes, who recently finished his junior year at Kent State University, rode a wave of momentum into the tournament after spending a few days last week with Team Canada's men's assistant coach, Ralph Bauer.
"I just kind of carried that momentum into this week," Hughes told John Down of the Calgary Herald. "I got some good feelings with the putter, started hitting it really well and once I got going, got a couple good rounds under my belt. I liked my chances today, for sure.
A pair of Kent State sophomores to be, Corey Conners (Listowel, Ont.) and Taylor Pendrith (Richmond, Hill, Ont.) also faired well. Conners placed tied for sixth with rounds of 72-74-74 (220, +4) while Pendrith took 15th with rounds of 75-77-72 (224, +8).
Hughes will remain in Calgary for at least one more day as he tries to make it through Monday qualifying for this week's Canadian Tour stop, the ATB Financial Classic.
