Golden Flashes Wrap Up U.S. Amateur Run

Hahn reaches round of 16 for a second straight year
ERIN HILLS, Wis. – Kent State senior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario) and alum John Hahn (Las Vegas, Nev.) wrapped up their run into the match-up scoring tree at the U.S. Amateur this past weekend.
Hughes, who will be the lone senior on the Golden Flashes roster in 2011-12, lost his first round match-up against Peter Williamson of Dartmouth 1-up. Hughes fell 3-down through 10 holes but won two of the next three holes to close within one. After losing the 15th hole he was back to 2-down, but a par on 17 won him the hole. On the long par5 675-yard 18th bother Hughes and Williamson made bogey which in turn gave Williamson a 1-up victory.
Hahn, meanwhile had another strong showing as he advanced to the round of 16 for a second consecutive year. The three-time All-American's run began with a 2&1 victory over Alabama All-American Hunter Hamrick in a match that started on Wednesday evening and was finally concluded the next morning. After defeating Hamrick, Hahn faced 16-year old phenom Beau Hossler. the Thursday afternoon match was all square through 18 before birdies by Hahn on 17 and 18 secured a 2-up win.
In the round of 16, the recent Kent State graduate dropped a 3&2 decision to Englishman Jack Senior.
Earlier in the week incoming freshman Nick Scott (Union, Ohio) just missed the match-play scoring tree losing in a playoff as 20 players tied for the final four spots after the 36 holes of stroke play. Scott carded rounds of 68 and 74.
Also in action at the U.S. Amateur this week for Kent State were sophomore Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario), who shot a 149 (74-75) and incoming sophomore transfer Kyle Kmiecik (Avon, Ohio) who had a 146 (76-70).
The Golden Flashes are schedule to begin play in the 2011-12 season on Sept. 11-12 at the Gopher Invitational. Minnesota will serve as the host for the tournament which takes place at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn.
