Kent State University and head wrestling coach Jim Andrassy recently agreed to a contract extension through the 2015-16 season. The extension keeps the ninth-year head coach at his alma mater for an additional four years.
Andrassy came to Kent State 22 years ago as a student-athlete and has been a part of the wrestling program ever since.
Since the 2005-06 season, the Golden Flashes have gone 94-30-1 in dual meets under Andrassy. During that time, Kent State has never finished below second place in the MAC regular season standings or the conference tournament. The Flashes have also sent five or more wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in each of the past six seasons.
Andrassy was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading Kent State to a MAC regular season title. In the past three seasons, he has helped produce five All-American performances from four different wrestlers including a 2011 national champion (Dustin Kilgore) and three NCAA top 25 team finishes.
This season, the Golden Flashes gave Andrassy his 100th career win as a head coach and are ranked No. 16 in the latest Coaches Poll. According to The Open Mat, six Flashes are ranked in the Top 20.
Off the mat, the wrestling team has showed continued improvement in the classroom. During the 2011 Spring Semester, the Golden Flashes carried a team grade point average of 3.0 for the first time since such records were first kept in 1982.
Prior to being named the head coach in 2003, Andrassy was an assistant coach for the Golden Flashes for the previous nine seasons, including the last six as a full-time assistant. He earned four letters and a MAC individual title as a wrestler from 1991-94 and is a member of the 100-win club.
Kent State (9-4, 2-0) hosts No. 19 Central Michigan (12-3, 4-0) in a pivotal Mid-American Conference dual Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m.
