Kent State Volleyball's Drops Three-Setter to Akron

AKRON, Ohio — The Kent State volleyball team lost on the road to rival Akron in three sets (12-25, 17-25, 21-25) Friday (Nov. 9) night at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Mid-American Conference match was part of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, which Akron now leads 3-2.
The Golden Flashes (6-21, 3-12) struggled getting their offense going, recording just 23 kills and a .100 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Tinuke Aderemi-Ibitola (Ellicott City, Md.) led the attack for Kent State with 10 kills. Junior setter Aleksandra Nowak (Damnica, Poland) recorded a team-high 12 assists and sophomore setter Jenny Buczek (Orland Park, Ill.) added eight assists and a team-high 10 digs.
Kent State dug an 8-1 hole in the opening set, but responded by taking four of the next six sets. That is as close as they would get and dropped the set, 25-12. The Flashes led 13-12 in the second set before Akron used a 9-2 run to pull away and eventually take the set, 25-17. The third set was the most competitive of the night, featuring 13 ties and five lead changes. With the score even 21-21, the Zips finished the match with four straight points.
Akron was led by Alex Cocklin, who posted a match-high 18 kills. Morgan Kuhn tallied 37 assists while Jill Paluch led the defense with 13 digs.
Kent State concludes the 2012 season Saturday (Nov. 10) night at 7:30 p.m. at Buffalo.
