Golden Flashes gain 12-shots on the leaders following second round 295
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Battling a 16-shot deficit and a relentless rain throughout the afternoon No. 18 Kent State rallied back with a second round 295 to finish day one of the 43rd Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in fourth place. The Golden Flashes navigated the par 71 - 7455 yard Scarlet Course at Ohio State with a 36-hole score of 603 (308-295) which left them and four strokes off the lead shared by No. 36 Indiana and the host Buckeyes.
"We really hung in there in the afternoon and it gives us a chance heading into tomorrow," said Director of Golf/Head Coach Herb Page, whose team won its fourth title int he event last season.
"The rain was coming down pretty good all afternoon make the conditions tough for everyone, but our guys just kept grinding away. After the rough start to the morning, I think their pride took over a bit in the afternoon and it allowed us to gain a few place and strokes back on the leaderboard."
The second round 295 was the second lowest 18 hole team score of the day amongst the 15-team field. Junior Kevin Miller (Dover, Ohio) and sophomore Corey Conners (Listowel, Ontario) anchored the performance as each shot a 72 (+1). Miller's up and down second round was highlighted by one of only two eagles by the entire field the whole day. His eagle came on the par 5, 562-yard 12th when he holed out with a lob wedge from 85 yards. With a 149 (77-72) total, he sits tied for fourth and two shots back of Max Buckley of SMU.
Senior Mackenzie Hughes (Dundas, Ontario) is tied for eighth with a 150 (73-77) and was the low man for the Golden Flashes in round one. Conners is also in striking distance of the leaders at 151 (79-72) which has him tied for 13th.
Sophomores Kyle Kmiecik (Avon, Ohio) and sophomore Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario) rounded out the line-up for Kent State on Saturday. Kmiecik is tied for 36th after shooting 154 (79-75) and Pendrith is tied for 49th with a 154 (81-76).
Competing as an individual freshman Nick Scott is tied for 19th after back-to-back rounds of 76 for a 152, 36-hole total.
Final round action starts at 9:06 am for Kent State which will be paired with Xavier and Northwestern.
