COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Kent State's Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) earned the right to represent the United States at the University World Championships in Finland after sweeping Richard Perry in a best-of-three final during the University World Team Trials Saturday at Palmer High School.
Kilgore earned an automatic spot in the 96kg final by winning the University National title back in June. After Perry won Saturday's challenge tournament, Kilgore defeated him in two periods (1-0, 2-1) in their opening bout. Kilgore then sealed his victory the same way he won his 2011 NCAA championship…with a pin. He took the opening period of match two 4-1, before planting Perry 44 seconds into the second period with a cradle.
Returning to Kent, Ohio this week, Kilgore will soon begin his final season with the Golden Flashes as he seeks a second NCAA crown at 197 pounds. He and the U.S. team will compete at the University World Championships Oct. 2-7 in Kourtane, Finland.
