KENT, Ohio – Senior Jessacca Gironda scored two goals to lead the Kent State women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Akron Zips (4-7-3, 1-4-1) on Sunday afternoon at Zoeller Field. The win, improved Kent State to 9-5-0 overall with a 4-2-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play, and also earns a point for the Golden Flashes in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Gironda, who currently ranks third in both goals scored and points earned in a career in the Kent State record book, tallied her ninth and 10^th goal of the season en route to a KSU victory.

A strong defensive effort for both squads was displayed throughout the first 45 minutes as the teams battled to a scoreless tie at the intermission. Kent State out-shot the Zips 12-2 in the first 45 minutes, as the Akron keeper made five saves to keep the Golden Flashes off the scoreboard.

After the half, it only took Kent State 10 minutes to get its offense going. In the 56^th minute, Brianna Bartolone took a free kick that Jaclyn Dutton was able to get a foot on and flick to Gironda. Gironda put the ball into the high and over the goalkeeper to give Kent State an early 1-0 advantage.

Gironda tallied her second goal of the day in the 85^th minute when Gironda put in a ball from rookie Abbie Lawson.

Kent State ended the game with a 20-3 advantage in shots, including an 8-1 lead in the second half. The Golden Flashes also edged Akron in corner kicks, 6-5.

Gironda had a game-high six shots, including four on goal in her 73 minutes of play, while Dutton posted five shots, including one on goal. Goalkeeper Stephanie Senn tallied one save in her 90 minutes of action to earn her sixth shutout of the season and improve to 9-5-0 on the year.

Akron's Luevano-Harden was handed the loss in today's game after posting seven saves in net to fall to 1-4-0 in the 2013 campaign.

The Golden Flashes will now host Western Michigan at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, followed by a 1 p.m. game vs, Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 20.
