
Women’s Soccer Hosts Western & Eastern Michigan This Weekend

KENT, Ohio - The Kent State women's soccer team, who currently sits in first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division standings, will take on Western and Eastern Michigan at Zoeller Field this weekend. The Golden Flashes will challenge the Broncos at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, followed by a 1 p.m. contest vs. the Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 20.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN FLASHES
Currently boasting a 9-5-0 overall record with a 4-2-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play, Kent State is coming off a 2-0 weekend with victories over Buffalo (2-0) and Akron (1-0). Senior forward Jessacca Gironda scored all three of Kent State's goals over the weekend, and was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts. She leads the league in points (23), goals (10), game-winning goals (5), goals per game (0.71) and shots per game (3.57). Her total goals ranks 26th in the country, and her goals per game ranks 31st.
After two-shutout victories for the Golden Flashes last weekend, goalkeeper Stephanie Senn picked up her sixth shutout to rank first in the MAC. Her 0.80 goals against average ranks second and her save .838 save percentage is third-best in the league. Kent State boasts the MAC's top defense, allowing just 0.50 goals per game in conference place this season.
SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Broncos (7-3-3, 5-0-1) remain the lone undefeated team in MAC play heading into this weekend and will look to extend their eight-game unbeaten streak. Last weekend, Western Michigan battled Miami to a 0-0 double overtime tie, and went on to defeat Ball State 2-1. Ali Russo netted both goals in the victory over Ball State, including the game's opening goal in just the fifth minute and tallied the game-winner in the 80th minute.
Western Michigan is second in the league in goals scored (25), and is led by Aubrey Sudomer's 11 points (3 g, 5 a). Gina Maddi is next with 10 points on four goals and two assists, while six other Broncos have scored two goals or more.
Michelle Watson is 7-3-3 in goal for the Broncos with five shutouts. She has allowed 11 goals (0.84 gaa) and has 45 saves (.804) on the year.
SCOUTING EASTERN MICHIGAN
Eastern Michigan's six-game winning streak came to an end this weekend as the Eagles were defeated by both Ball State (1-0) and Miami (1-0). Team captain Cara Cutaia leads the offense with 18 points with seven goals this season, ranking third in the Mid-American Conference in both categories.
Following closely behind are juniors Angela Vultaggio and Bianca Rossi, who have six and five goals, respectively. Both forwards, along with seniors Cutaia and Stephanie Clarke, have four assists through the first 14 games of the 2013 campaign to pace the team.
EMU goalkeeper Megan McCabe holds down the defensive side of the pitch, stopping 61 shots in 14 games between the posts, the second most saves among all MAC goalies as well as 97th nationally.
THE RECORDS
The Golden Flashes will meet up with Western Michigan for the 16th time on Friday afternoon and lead the all-time series, 7-6-2. Last season, Kent State defeated Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, 1-0, in overtime minutes.
Kent State will match up against the Eagles for the 17th time, and have a 7-9-0 all-time record. After five straight losses from 2007-2010, Kent State has won the last two games in Ypsilanti, including a 2-1 win in 2011 and a 3-0 victory in 2012.
