Mendelsohn's Overtime Three Secures Season-Opening Victory

KENT, Ohio – With two seconds remaining in overtime, Golden Flashes trailing by two, Rachel Mendelsohn sunk a three point shot to secure a 75-74 season-opening victory for Kent State (1-0) over Eastern Kentucky (1-1).
"I'm just so proud of this team because the harder you work, the luckier you get," said Head Coach Danielle O'Banion, "and that was true today. They showed great resilience."
Sunday night's (Nov. 10) contest was a back-and-forth affair, with the game being tied 12 different times and the lead switching hands five times.
"They just kept battling," said O'Banion. "We didn't play a perfect game but we played well enough to beat a very good Eastern Kentucky team."
Eastern Kentucky went on a 5-0 run to close the first half with a 34-27 lead, but Kent State came on strong in the second. The Golden Flashes had eight blocks and ten steals in the second half alone to fuel the win.
Kent State had a 62-60 lead after two made free throws with 16 seconds left in regulation, but the Colonels made things interesting, hitting a jumper with five seconds left to send the game into bonus time.
In overtime, the back-and-forth battle continued. Down 72-74, Ashley Evans stole the ball and took it down court, eventually setting Mendelsohn up for her game-winning bucket with two seconds left.
Mendelsohn led Kent State with a career-high 21 points, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. Montia Johnson reached a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds.
Larissa Lurken helped out with 17 points. 11 of her points came at the charity stripe in 13 attempts. CiCi Shannon was strong on defense with a game-high five blocks. She also had four assists and helped ignite the team by scoring the first Kent State basket in every period.
The Golden Flashes are home again on Thursday (Nov. 14) as they host their next opponent, Duquesne, at 7:00 pm. Kent State will then be on the road for the rest of November, returning back to the M.A.C. Center on December 4.
