Kent State (6-1) looks for its fifth consecutive win when it hosts local rival Youngstown State (6-1) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the M.A.C. Center.
Both teams appear in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll this week. Kent State enters the rankings for the first time this season at No. 21. Youngstown State comes in at No. 17 after entering the poll at No. 25 a week ago.
The Golden Flashes are coming off a successful weekend in which they won three games in three nights as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. One night after making a school-record 18 three-pointers in a 79-78 thriller against USC Upstate, the Flashes lit up the scoreboard for 102 points against Niagara. It marked their first time reaching the century mark since Nov. 10, 2006 (S. Dakota St.).
Senior forward Mark Henniger, who was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week on Monday, has really come into his during the current seven-game homestand. Henniger set a new career scoring mark in three of Kent State's games, including 20 points against Niagara on Saturday. Over the past four games, he averaged 13 points while shooting 83% from the field and 96% from the free throw line.
The versatility of this Golden Flashes squad was on display over the weekend, as they won in different ways and received key contributions from different players each night. Six player averaged 9.7 ppg or more, led by junior Devareaux Manley (13.7 ppg). The bench also got in on the action, as sophomore Khaliq Spicer led the way with 5.7 rpg and sophomore K.K. Simmons scored eight straight points during a key stretch in the second to put the Flashes ahead for good.
Junior point guard Kris Brewer leads the Flashes in scoring at 12.4 ppg on the season, followed by 11.3 ppg each from Manley and junior Derek Jackson. Seven players average at least 6.7 ppg and an eighth averages 4.9, as third-year head coach Rob Senderoff has used an 11-man rotation in the early part of the season.
Youngstown State opened the season with three wins in three nights, but has not beaten a Division I opponent since. The Penguins are coming off of decisive victories over a pair of Division III schools last week. Senior guard Kendrick Perry is the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year and averages 17.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 4.7 apg. Four other players are averaging in double-figures for the Penguins.
