KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University gymnastics team will open the 2013-14 season today (Friday) when it hosts Pittsburgh in an exhibition meet at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The meet is open to the public, and admission is free.
Last season, the No. 23 nationally ranked Golden Flashes went 19-9 overall, including an undefeated 6-0 mark in the Mid-American Conference to be named regular season champions. Kent State capped off its season with a sixth place score of 193.500 at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional hosted by the University of Alabama, which was the team's sixth straight regional appearance and 18th overall in 22 seasons under Head Coach Brice Biggin.
Senior Marie Case returns to the Golden Flashes lineup this season after an outstanding junior campaign in which she was named the MAC all-around champion and was the Co-MAC Gymnast of the Year for the second straight season. She earned MAC Gymnast of the Week honors three consecutive weeks, was a first team All-MAC selection and a NACGC/W Scholastic All-American.
Also returning for Kent State is Nicolle Eastman, who had a solid rookie season, and junior Amiah Mims. Eastman posted personal bests of 9.825 on vault, 9.900 on beam and 9.875 on floor. Mims posted a career-high 9.8 on bars at Penn State, and tied a career-best with a 9.750 on beam. She was also an Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection.
Coming back from an injury suffered during her freshman year, junior Chelsea Drooger starred on three events last season for the Golden Flashes and is expected to be another solid contributor. Drooger posted personal bests on vault (9.875), bars (9.850) and beam (9.775).
After Friday's competition, the Golden Flashes will open the regular season at Southeast Missouri State on Jan. 12, and will host Eastern Michigan, George Washington and Rutgers on Jan. 17.
For future events, fans can purchase tickets by calling the M.A.C. Center ticket office at 330.672.2244 or stopping by in person. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for youth and seniors.
