Women's basketball head coach Danielle O'Banion announced Wednesday that junior college transfer Montia Johnson (Springfield, Mo.) has signed a letter of intent to join the program after two years at Cowley College.
Johnson is a 6'1" power forward who earned NJCCA Honorable Mention All-American, First Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference honors in 2013-14. She led the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference in total rebounds with 345 a season ago and posted a career high 18 rebounds along with 21 points on February 6th. Johnson helped the team to a 29-5 record and a spot in the conference championship game. She averaged a double-double with 11.9 points and 10.1 rebounds a game in the 2012-2013 season. Johnson is the daughter of Mary Toman.
"Adding a player of Montia's ability to our 2013 signing class will immediately strengthen our team," said head coach Danielle O'Banion. "Her toughness, physicality and winning mentality will help our emerging interior game. She has shown tremendous improvement since high school, highlighted by earning honorable mention NJCAA All-American honors at Cowley. We are convinced her best basketball is ahead and are very happy to foster her development."
Johnson will join fellow transfers Mikell Chinn (Garden City CC/Cincinnati, Ohio), and Cheylene Harper (Arizona /Asheville, N.C.) along with prep standouts Janae Peterson (Lake Elisinore, Calif.), junior Emily Leonard (Miamisburg, Ohio), Larissa Lurken (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) to make up the seven-player incoming class for Kent State this fall.
