Flashes collect more individual gold, team titles in sight after Day 2 of MAC Outdoor Championships

AKRON, Ohio โ The Kent State track and field teams added three more individual gold medals to their collection and further positioned themselves for matching team titles after Day 2 at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Akron at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
After eight scored events, the women stand first and are moving towards a fourth straight team title with 74 points.ย Buffalo is second with 53.5, while Akron is third at 50 in the 11-team field.ย The men, runners-up the past two seasons, are second with 50 points after seven scored events.ย Akron leads the six-team field with 73 points, with Miami (Ohio) in third at 48.
The Golden Flashes won three individual golds on the opening day of competition and continued the trend with three more on Day 2.
Sophomore Matthias Tayala (McDonald, Ohio) won the men's hammer throw with a toss of 215 feet, 6 inches.ย
Junior Joh'vonnie Mosley (Youngstown, Ohio) won the women's shot put at 51-2.75.ย It was a key event as the Flashes also had freshman Danniel Thomas (Shrewsbery, Jamaica) finish fourth at 50-9.50 and sophomore Jackie Leppelmeier (McComb, Ohio) place seventh at 48-3.25.
The Golden Flashes also scored key points in the women's long jump as sophomore Roseanne Erickson (Alexandria, Minn.) leaped to the individual title at 19-11.ย Kent State swept the top three spots in the event as juniorย Ann Marie Duffus (North Clarendon, Jamaica) placed second at 19-10.75 and freshman Dior Delophont (Nancy, France) finished third at 19-4.
The Flashes also got key points from freshman Michael King (Salem, Ohio), third in the men's shot put at 56-2.50; junior Andrew Goodwin (Celina, Ohio), third in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 13.27 seconds; senior Dexter Shreve, sixth in the men's decathlon with 6,695 points; and sophomore Kyle Tywon (Tallmadge, Ohio), eighth in the men's decathlon with 6,560 points.
Senior Diana Dumitrescu (Campulung, Arges Romania) placed fifth in the women's heptathlon with 4,935 points.
