CLEVELAND, Ohio—Kent State juniors Corey Conners and Kyle Kmiecik were named to the 2013 Men's Golf Academic All-Mid-American Conference team, the league announced Wednesday (May 29). The Golden Flashes are one of only two schools with multiple representatives on the academic team.
A mathematics major with a 3.47 GPA, Conners earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC team for the second straight year. He has posted the sixth-best single-season average in school history (72.10) on his way to PING All-Midwest Region and First Team All-MAC honors. The 2012 PING Honorable Mention All-American, MAC Golfer of the Year, and MAC Championships medalist, Conners collected the second individual tournament victory of his college career at the season-opening Gopher Invitational. Competing at the prestigious Western Refining Collegiate All-America Classic in the fall, Conners became the fourth Kent State golfer to shoot an entire tournament in the 60s (67-67-69=203) on his way to placing fifth.
A finance major with a 3.31 GPA, Kmiecik has been selected to the Second Team All-MAC each of the past two seasons. Fourth on the team with a 75.50 scoring average, Kmiecik has a pair of top-10 finishes this season, including tying for ninth at the MAC Championships. Kmiecik has carded six rounds at par or better and shot a low round of 67 at the final round of the Aggie Invitational.
Student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests that season to be considered for the Academic All-MAC team. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible. Faculty athletic representatives from each school select the team with remaining nominees receiving honorable mention designation.
