NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Kent State Herb Page Men's Golf team finished in 11th place in the Fighting Irish Classic on Monday evening, marking their highest placement in a tournament's final standings so far this season.
Leading the way for the team was Nolan Haynes. The junior from Barberton, Ohio had his best tournament statistically of his collegiate career, finishing tied for 5th place individually out of 81 golfers. Haynes' top 10 finish was a career-best placement as he shot two strokes under par through the 54-hole event, giving him a 208 for his final score.
Haynes started off his impressive day shooting a 64 in the first round, which is not only a personal best for him, but also places him tied for 5th overall in program history for the lowest score in a single 18-hole round.
Accompanying Haynes towards the top half of the leaderboard was Christoffer Leuenhagen. The Esbjerg, Denmark native shot seven birdies throughout the 54 hole tournament, including four in the first round where he ultimately shot a stroke under par. Leuenhagen's 69 in the first round is a new personal best for the sophomore.
Elsewhere in the tournament, California, Texas A&M and host school Notre Dame all came within one stroke of each other, separating the top three schools by a razor thin margin.
Although the Golden Flashes weren't able to reach the level of the top few schools in the tournament, they did tie with Augusta, defeat Louisville by a stroke, and defeat Iowa by a considerable margin of victory.
