Golden Flashes finish strong in final tune-up meet for MAC championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Kent State track and field teams completed their final tune-up meet for next week's Mid-American Conference championship meet with a strong performance today (May 4) on the final day of the two-day Campbell/Wright Invitational hosted by the University of Akron at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
Freshman Dior Delophont (Nancy, France) won the women's high jump at 6 feet even, just three-quarters of an inch off the Kent State record of 6-00.75 set by Alex Church in 2003. Delophont's leap is first in the MAC, 7th in the East Region and 10th in the nation this season.
Sophomore Matthias Tayala (McDonald, Ohio) won the men's discus throw at 185-7 to rank first in the MAC, 13th in the East Region and 30th in the country. Tayala, who also won the Campbell/Wright hammer throw at 205-0, is ranked first in the MAC and eighth nationally in that event after his 217-9 toss April 25-27 at the Penn Relays.
Junior Shanequa Williams (Akron, Ohio) won the women's 400-meter dash in a MAC-best time of 54.45 seconds. Williams also placed second in the 200 in 23.84 to rank second among conference times in that event.
Sophomore Jacob Swords (Akron, Ohio) won the men's 800 in 1 minute, 50.12 seconds to rank second in the MAC, while freshman William Barnes (Columbus, Ohio) won the men's 110 hurdles in 14.20, which is third in the conference.
The Golden Flashes also had runner-up finishes at the Campbell/Wright Invitational from senior Brandon Bailey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the men's 200; freshman Cody Jones (Canton, Ohio) in the men's high jump; senior Domenica Rossi (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) in the women's pole vault; and sophomore Colin Killins (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the men's triple jump.
Bailey ran 21.55 and is ranked fifth in the MAC; Jones jumped 6-10.75 to rank third; Rossi vaulted 12-10.25 to rank third; and Killins leaped 47-6.25 to rank fifth.
The Flashes return May 9-11 to the University of Akron's Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex for the MAC championship meet.
