
Women's Soccer Dominates in 3-0 Victory over Youngstown State

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team earned a commanding a 3-0 victory over the visiting Youngstown State Penguins on Friday afternoon at Zoeller Field.  The win improves the Golden Flashes to 5-3-0 overall, while Youngstown dropped to 1-7-1.
"I thought it was a great result today," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "We had high energy to start the game and capitalized on opportunities early and that made a big difference today."

Just six minutes into the game, Kent State junior Stephanie Haugh took a corner kick that rookie teammate Jenna Hellstrom one-timed past the Youngstown State goalkeeper to give the Golden Flashes an early 1-0 lead.Â

Kent State increased its lead to 2-0 after Youngstown State had a handball in the box. Kent State senior Jessacca Gironda stepped up and nailed the ball into the high left corner of the net in the 38th minute to give Kent State a two-goal lead heading into halftime.

The Golden Flashes did not back down after the half and came out with just as much intensity in the second period. Senior Morgan Mah lit up the scoreboard in the 63rd minute on a direct kick to earn her first goal of the year.

The Golden Flashes boasted an 18-5 lead in shots, including nine on goal to Youngstown's three.  Kent State also edged Youngstown State in corner kicks, 5-4.Â

Stephanie Senn picked up the win for the Flashes in goal to improve to 5-3-0. Senn had three saves in 90 minutes today to earn her third shutout of the year. Youngstown State keeper Jackie Podolsky earned the loss for the Penguins. She posted six saves in her 90 minutes of action.

The Golden Flashes will begin Mid-American Conference play at Zoeller Field next weekend.  Kent State matches up against Central Michigan at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, followed by a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday against Bowling Green.
