KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team headed to Conway, South Carolina, to take on both Coastal Carolina and the College of Charleston in the College of Charleston Cup at Patriots Point this weekend. The Golden Flashes will matchup vs. the Chanticleer's at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 2:30 p.m. game vs. the host Cougars on Sunday.
Fans who can't make it out to Patriots Place can watch Sunday's game by a web-based broadcast through CofCsports.com, and live statistics and virtual play-by-play will also be provided for both games, free of charge. You can also follow @KentStSoccer on twitter for live in-game updates.
The Golden Flashes are coming off a 2-0 weekend after 1-0 victories over Cleveland State and Valparaiso to improve to 3-1-0 on the year. Senior Jessacca Gironda earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week for her two game-winning goals. Gironda leads Kent State in scoring with five points on two goals and an assist, while Jenna Hellstrom and Madison Helterbran both have four points.
Coastal Carolina enters this weekend with a 2-1-1 overall record, including a 2-0 victory against Wofford and a 4-0 win at USC Upstate. Last season, the Chanticleers finished 10-9-0 and finished fifth in the Big South with a 7-4-0 mark. The squad returned nine starters, including top scorer Kacey Kelly (9-1-19), Fia Jonsson (6-5-17) and Christina Stern (2-3-7). Six different players have scored a goal for Coastal Carolina to lead the offense, while Megan Spencer leads the defense with a 2-1-1 mark in the goal.
The College of Charleston has a 1-3 record, and is coming off a 6-2 loss to now-ranked No. 32 Illinois. Victoria Fichman leads the offense with four points on two goals, followed by Mccallie Jones, Danielle Mellem and Jade Reynolds with two goals apiece. Charleston's lone win came in two overtimes on Aug. 23 against Charleston Southern.
After this weekend, the Golden Flashes will head to Cincinnati for a 1 p.m. game on Sept. 15.
